Devastation Across Central Texas: Rising Death Toll and Missing Persons

As of Monday, July 7, 2025, authorities confirmed more than 111 fatalities across six Central Texas counties: Kerr, Travis, Burnet, Kendall, Tom Green, and Williamson. Kerr County has been the hardest hit, with 87 confirmed deaths, including approximately 57 adults and 30 children. Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp in Kerr County, reported “grieving the loss of 27 campers and counselors.” Additional deaths include seven in Kendall, seven in Travis, five in Burnet, three in Williamson, and one in Tom Green County.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated on Tuesday, July 8, that 173 people remain missing in the region, including five children and one counselor from the summer camp, and one child not affiliated with the camp. Eyewitnesses described a “huge wall of water” as the Guadalupe River surged between 20 and 26 feet on July 4, rising 20 feet in under 90 minutes near Kerrville.

Ongoing Search and Rescue Efforts Amid Disaster Declarations

In response to the disaster, local, state, and federal authorities have mobilized. Kerr County is collecting funds and donations. Governor Abbott declared a major disaster in numerous Texas counties on July 5, followed by President Donald Trump’s federal major disaster declaration on July 6. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, supported by the U.S. Border Patrol, Texas National Guard, military drones, and Black Hawk helicopters. Both Mexico and California have offered assistance, and the Federal Aviation Administration has issued a Temporary Flight Restriction along the Guadalupe River until July 13 to facilitate rescue efforts.
